Jan Van der Merwe

Jan Van der Merwe

Project Lead - The Angels Initiative, Boehringer Ingelheim

In December 2013 a close family member of Jan’s suffered a stroke. She arrived at the hospital around 30 minutes after the onset of symptoms but was not given any therapy. 7 Hours later a nurse in the hospital decided to request the first CT scan as her symptoms were not improving. The scan showed a massive stroke but due to the loss of time no acute treatment could be given. As a result a dynamic school principle and her family lost the life they knew before. The experience of the months and years that followed and the knowledge that the outcome could have been very different had the patient received the appropriate therapy, motivated him to find a way to improve acute stroke care in his home country South Africa – the idea for the Angels Initiative was born. After his transfer to the German head office in Ingelheim, Jan and Thomas Fischer (who shared in his goal of improving stroke care) formally started the Angels Initiative as it is known today.

Jan started his formal education after school with a Bachelor Degree in Human Movement Sciences. After that he also completed a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration with Marketing as specialization and later a MBA with the Henley Business School.

Jan has 15 years of Pharmaceutical experience in various positions in South Africa and in Germany.

As the project lead for the Angels Initiative he is dedicated to do whatever it takes to change the face of acute stroke treatment in the world so that others don’t have to suffer the same preventable fate as his family member.

Originally trained as a Zoologist, Graham studied statistics and experimental design at Imperial College, London, before joining ICI as a research scientist with specific responsibility for field trials and statistics liaison.

Graham joined the Pharmaceutical Industry in 1982 where he spent 20 years in sales and marketing during which time he was head of the Pharmaceuticals division for Roche UK and Strategic Planning Director for Astra Pharmaceuticals; in which capacity he gained practical working experience in the world’s major pharmaceutical markets, including both the US and Japan. This experience led to an interest in healthcare reform, a subject on which he has published a number of articles and booklets.

Graham gained his PhD in “Competitive Strategy in the Pharmaceutical Industry” from Cranfield University. A member of the Economics and Strategy group at Aston University in Birmingham for 15 years Graham now actively researches the measurement and implications of strategic choice on corporate valuation, competitive position and return on investment, primarily, but not exclusively, within the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare industries. Research tempered by practical consulting experience gained in assisting a variety of companies to build value based strategies, measure their promotional effects, calculate return on investment and make rational strategic choices.

Graham’s main research interests centre upon strategic groups and how to measure strategy with the measurement of ROI on strategic and promotional activities a particular speciality. In 2012 Graham won the West Midlands Medilink Award for work with Kimal Plc and in 2013 the industry award (BOBI) for commercial analysis/SFE for work with MSD.

Key current interests are the optimal choice of promotional investment, the measurement of adherence and advanced segmentation techniques.
