Heather Simmonds is the Director of the Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority (PMCPA).  Heather chairs the Code of Practice Panel, which considers complaints submitted under the Code in the first instance, and is responsible for the overall running of the organisation.  Heather also works with IFPMA and EFPIA in relation to their codes of practice. 

Heather has a degree in pharmacology and joined the ABPI in 1984.  Heather has been working full time on the Code of Practice since 1989 and has been Director of the Authority since 1997.

Len Starnes has over 13 years experience in pharmaceuticals
e-business. He currently heads global e-business for Bayer Schering Pharma’s Primary Care business unit and held similar global and European positions in Schering. His most recent areas of focus include healthcare social networking, enterprise search engine marketing, and integrated multi-channel patient relationship management programmes.

Prior to joining Schering Len was located in Paris where he headed corporate communications for the Raychem Corporation, responsible for the energy, process and electronics industries. He has also held executive positions with the public affairs department of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) - and in another life, has a long track record as a London-based publisher, writer and journalist specializing in science, energy and environmental issues.

He holds degrees in business administration, solid-state physics, and physics from Boston University, Manchester University and University College London, respectively.

Bernie Ruszala is Vice President Global Marketing at Ferring International Centre St Prex Switzerland. Bernie started his career teaching Biology and Science before moving into pharmaceutical sales with Bristol Myers. He subsequently gained experience in Pharmaceutical Advertising as both an Account Manager and Director, before moving back into the Industry with Serono. He held several marketing and sales roles within Serono's fertility, paediatric and Immunology businesses before moving to Ferring UK in 1996 as Marketing Director and General Manager in 1997.

Bernie was born in Derby and studied Zoology in Durham followed by a Post Graduate course in Leeds.  He is married with four children and enjoys playing sport, particularly running and walking.

Lawrence Sherman, FACME, CCMEP Biographical Sketch

Lawrence Sherman is currently Senior Vice President, Educational Strategy at Prova Education, an affiliate of Omnia Education, an ACCME-accredited provider.  Prova education designs, develops and implements strategic continuing medical education initiatives globally that are based on comprehensive needs assessments, utilize methodologies designed to help learners improve patient outcomes, and that are evaluated using a variety of outcomes measures.  Lawrence has collaborated with other accredited and non-accredited providers, content delivery experts, and academic institutions to insure that the educational activities developed are of the highest quality and reach the largest possible audience. 

In his role at Prova Education, Lawrence is tasked with the challenge of overseeing all account management, client service, clinical and editorial staff for activities that he designs and develops.  In addition, Lawrence works closely with the faculty of the educational activities that he develops to insure that the materials developed are scientifically rigorous and that the content is compelling.   He also helps to forge partnerships with organizations and associations that require Continuing Medical Education or Continuing Professional Development (CME or CPD) certification for activities that they are developing. 

Lawrence often moderates consensus panels and curriculum development meetings and also leads the podium skills training sessions during speaker training meetings.

Having been involved in medical education for over 15 years, Lawrence has worked for a number of other medical education organizations, including Jobson Education, Health Science Communications, Physicians World Communications Group, CoMed Communication/Vox Medica, and Strategic Implications International.

In January 2007, Lawrence was named a Fellow of the Alliance for Continuing Medical Education (FACME); Lawrence is a frequent presenter at their annual conference.  Additionally, he has served on the Alliance Professional Development Coordinating Committee and on the 2007 and 2008 Annual Conference Working Group.  He served as the Leader of the Medical Education and Communications Company Alliance (MECCA) within the Alliance from 2003 until 2005. 

In addition, Lawrence is a past member of the Board of Directors of the North American Association of Medical Education and Communications Companies (NAAMECC), and has served as an appointed member of the Professional Education Committee of the American Heart Association.

Lawrence is a Clinical Instructor in Emergency Medicine for the CEMSTI of the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System in Long Island, NY.

Lastly, Lawrence frequently lectures around the world on topics including:

  • roles of social networking in CME

  • regulations and guidelines in CME

  • international/global CME and CPD

  • key opinion leader development

  • outcomes measurements in CME

  • the use of emerging technologies in medical education

  • strategic medical education.

Having once been a stand-up comedian in New York, his lectures and presentations tend to combine humor, compelling content, and audience involvement. 

His undergraduate and medical education was in New York and has had additional training in professional medical writing, pharmaceutical marketing, and adult education.

Fonny (°1963) moved to Across in August 2007 to lead the Across Health team. He joins from Johnson & Johnson, the first Life Sciences company worldwide as measured by market capitalization. He held regional and global roles of increasing responsibility in the ebusiness and CRM space at Janssen Pharmaceutica/Janssen-Cilag, the leading CRM company in pharmaceuticals in Europe.

In 2000, he co-designed and implemented a unique integrated ebusiness strategy in Pharma across Europe, with a focus on leveraging strategy, technology and content. In 2001-2002, he managed several pivotal, strongly-metricized multichannel pilots to drive change in the organization. In the following years, he extended his scope to salesforce effectiveness, and the alignment of the CRM IT and business strategy, initiating a unique European business governance structure for CRM.

Silja Chouquet is the owner and CEO of whydot GmbH, an agency specialized in social media consulting, coaching and training. Her fields of expertise are the creation of patient-focused social media communications and marketing campaigns.

Prior to starting her own business, Silja built a solid track record as a consultant and line manager in the health care industry with over ten years of experience. She worked for major pharmaceutical companies, where she held senior positions in sales, strategic planning, market research and business intelligence.

Silja started her career as a senior consultant at Mercer Management (now Oliver Wyman). She holds a BS in International Business and Marketing from Georgetown University in Washington DC and an MBA from INSEAD.

Silja grew up in Germany, studied in the US and worked in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland. She currently lives with her husband Francis, their daughter Lola and their two cats in Basel, Switzerland.

Kay Wesley BSc FCIM is a digital (online) marketing expert with more than 15 years experience in this space.  She led one of the most successful “dot com” brands of the 1990s, TopJobs, and with that award-winning business Kay signed AOL’s first ever European marketing deal and ran the UK’s first ever TV advertising campaign for an internet brand, among a number of “firsts”.  TopJobs became the number 1 brand in its sector in the UK and as Marketing VP Kay rolled-out the brand and business model to 9 further countries world-wide.

Kay led AstraZeneca’s digital marketing for five years, including web platform strategy, search marketing, online branding, content, edetailing and elearning, design and usability, online reputation including blogs, forums and social networks, online meetings and online customer relationship strategy.  During Kay’s leadership the digital strategy spanned more than 40 countries and AstraZeneca moved from laggard to industry leader in this space, acknowledged as such by the Financial Times, The Times, Bowen Craggs and Co, among others, winning a number of external and internal (AZ) awards.

Kay has chaired and keynoted a number of industry conferences on innovative and digital marketing.

Kay is also a general marketing expert.  Also at AstraZeneca Kay pioneered a new approach to global brand communications strategy and campaign planning and measurement that was adopted by all brands and led global brand communications for Seroquel.

Kay is now working as a marketing strategy consultant with a number of (mainly healthcare) organisations, most recently delivering a marketing strategy and plan for The Spinal Foundation.

Dr Mariann Hardey is a social media analyst, consultant and academic.  Through her various works she has sought to identify and understand how social relationships are mediated through Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) as they converge across ‘social media’ and through a ‘Web 2.0’.  In seeking to bridge the divide between academia and other sectors Mariann is critically engaged in collaborations with several Web 2.0 companies, commercial organisations and academic institutions. Alex is Social Media Director at Medimix International. Based in Miami, Florida, he advises on social media-related projects and builds social networks from business planning to launch. In his role at Medimix, Alex has developed and manages VoxMed, the worldwide online community for physicians and healthcare professionals, as well as Scanbuzz, the first online tracking service for reputation management, blogger relations, and brand monitoring in the life sciences. Alex is also an Adjunct Professor, teaching social media at the University of Miami, School of Communications, and at Miami-Dade College. He organizes Social Media Club, BarCamp, Mobile Monday, and RefreshMiami meetups and conferences for new media professionals.

Alex obtained an MBA from Insead in Fontainebleau, France. Previously, he directed business development efforts for online media and mobile content companies and also co-founded a leading European application services provider specializing in permission-based direct marketing.
